SPEAKER 1
Proverbs 1 verse 7 says, The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and instruction. This verse is the master key to all wisdom in the book of Proverbs, establishing that without a reverent faith and trust in God, all other knowledge remains empty and ultimately void. Worthless. we encounter antithetical parallelism,
0:52
where contrasting ideas highlight the difference between those who embrace knowledge and those who reject it. In this case, we see what is true of those who possess wisdom and those who do not. Importantly, the phrase fear of the Lord cannot be reduced to its individual words. It's a collocation. So if you think of the word sunflower,
1:19
whose meaning goes beyond merely understanding sun and flower, that's the same here. An example of this can be seen in Psalm 19. If you study that Psalm carefully, David uses connected terms. Law, testimony, statutes, commandment, and judgments. And he uses those words to describe God's revelation, as is clear, I think.

Proverbs 1:7 - The Fear of the Lord

The foundation of true knowledge begins with a right fear of the Lord—Proverbs starts here, drawing a clear line between wisdom and folly.

Proverbs 1:7, “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge: but fools despise wisdom and instruction.”

After watching the video, give some thought to the following question:

Just because we have the essence of the fear of the Lord does not mean we have eliminated all folly. In what areas of our lives might we still be acting like ‘fools’ who ‘despise wisdom and instruction,’ and how can we instead demonstrate a true fear of the Lord by listening to His wisdom and putting it into practice?
